COVID-19 has created a stir in the sporting world. Several big cricket series like IPL 2020 and T20 World Cup is scheduled to be held this year. But as things stand now, we don’t know when these tournaments will see the lights of the day. Over the past few days, there have been reports that T20 World Cup, which is supposed to take place in October-November in Australia might be pushed back to 2022. Though ICC hasn’t announced anything yet if that happens then IPL 2020 could take place during that window.
IPL is such a big event that several cricket stars have expressed their desire to take part in the tournament and the latest in this list is Australian batting wizard Steve Smith. He said that if T20 World Cup is postponed then he will focus on playing in IPL. For the time being, he is keeping himself prepared for any situation. “I’ve just sort of tried to switch off from it a little bit, which I don’t do often but focusing on getting myself fit and strong. Feel like I’ve had a preseason pretty much the last couple of months. Got me into good shape,” Smith said as quoted in Cricbuzz. Playing for the country remains his top priority. But Smith also knows that the World Cup might be postponed. “When you’re playing for your country in the World Cup, that’s the pinnacle for one-day or T20 cricket. I’ll of course prefer playing in that but if that doesn’t happen and the IPL is there and they postpone it then so be it. IPL is also a terrific tournament as a domestic tournament. It’s out of everyone’s control. Players are doing what we’re told, going where we are asked to go and play whatever is on at that stage,” Smith added.
