The wait is finally over! As per the latest reports, the Indian Premier League (IPL) going to start on 19th September. The final match will be held on 8th November. Keeping the COVID-19 situation in mind, the entire tournament will take place in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). There has been a lot of speculation over the last few weeks about IPL 2020. Several reports had claimed that countries like Sri Lanka and UAE have offered to organize the T-20 tournament. IPL governing council chairman Brijesh Patel has confirmed the news. “IPL, in all likelihood, will start on September 19 (Saturday) and the final will be held on November 8 (Sunday). It is a 51-day window which will suit the franchises as well as the broadcasters and other stakeholders,” he said as published by the Times of India.
Cancellation of IPL 2020 will result in a huge loss for the BCCI
IPL 2020 has been a cause of concern for the BCCI. The tournament was earlier scheduled to start from March 29, 2020. However, it was postponed for an indefinite period due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Canceling the tournament will amount to a loss of INR 4000 crore to the BCCI. So, they adopted a wait and watch policy for conducting this year’s IPL. Many reports have also suggested that BCCI tried all options to organize IPL 2020 in India. But the pandemic situation in the country has forced BCCI to move it outside India.
The start and end date of the IPL 2020 have been confirmed by the BCCI sources. However, a formal announcement will be made after the IPL governing council meeting. Apart from that, BCCI has to take necessary permission from the Indian government for conducting IPL in UAE. The franchises have already been told by the board to start preparing for the upcoming season. Asia Cup 2020 was postponed earlier this month. Later T-20 World Cup was also postponed by the ICC. This gave BCCI the much-needed window for IPL 2020.
