Indian Premier League (IPL) is one of the most talked-about cricket tournament. Be it in India, Bangladesh, or any cricket playing nation, every cricketer now dreams of playing in the cash-rich tournament. It is not just the money but also the launching pad that IPL provides to any budding cricketer who wants to make it big.
IPL has been a hot-bed of talent over the last few years and several stars were found in this tournament. Players like Jasprit Bumrah or Hardik Pandya first burst into the scene in IPL and later went to represent the country at the highest level. IPL began its journey in 2008 and since then it has been one of the top-notch tournaments in the world.
Former Pakistan pace bowler Wasim Akram knows it very well. He was associated as a coach with IPL team Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). He termed IPL as the best cricket tournament in the world. He also pointed out what are the differences between IPL and Pakistan Super League (PSL). Akram said investment in IPL is huge and PSL is far behind in this regard. He also explained that the money that BCCI earns from IPL is spent on the infrastructure of the first-class cricket in India. “There has been a huge difference between IPL and PSL in the last five-six years. They have put in a lot of money. IPL is the biggest cricket tournament in the world,” Akram opined during a conversation with Tanveer Ahmed on the latter’s YouTube channel.
IPL 2020 set to begin in UAE from September 19
Wasim Akram also compared the budget of the IPL and PSL team. During the chat, he said, “A team’s budget only is around 60-80 Cr to buy players…Indian currency…double in our currency. So when profit is made on that kind of money BCCI invests it back into first-class cricket.” he added.
IPL 2020 was supposed to start on March 29. However, it was postponed for an indefinite period due to COVID-19. But IPL governing council chairman Brijesh Patel recently said, IPL 2020 will start on September 19 and will continue till November in UAE. The schedule of the much-awaited tournament will be announced soon.
