Coronavirus has become a pandemic across the world. More than 200 countries are currently suffering from COVID-19. Novel coronavirus has forced the entire universe to go into lockdown. All sporting events including the Olympics have been affected by this global pandemic caused by Coronavirus. Cricket is no exception to this. Indian Premier League or the IPL is one of the most exciting cricket events. This year the tournament was supposed to begin from 29th March. But due to the spread of Coronavirus, IPL 2020 was postponed till 15th April.
Meanwhile, the central government of India has announced a 21 days lockdown to coronavirus. Excepting a few extraordinary cases, visa to all foreign national has also been suspended till 14th April. These two decisions by the central government has put the future of IPL 2020 in jeopardy. As per media reports, chances of IPL this is extremely slim. However final decision in this regard will be taken once the lockdown ends later this month. There have been a few suggestions like IPL 2020 could be shortened or even it might be postponed till October-November. These are all conjecture and cannot be considered as reliable.
At a time when cricket fans are waiting with bated breath to know the latest update on the cash-rich league, former England skipper Michael Vaughan has made a brilliant suggestion about IPL 2020. Recently he tweeted, “Here’s a thought .. The IPL is played for the 5 weeks leading up to the T20 World Cup in Oz .. all players use it as the great warm up for the WC .. then the WC happens .. So important for the game that the IPL takes place but also the WC.”
Is BCCI listening? Only time will tell!
